If you didn't love the movie, this may not be the Highlander slot for you, but otherwise, this hits all the right nostalgia notes.

Way back in 1986, the Highlander movie starring Sean Connery was released. While it has not necessarily gone down as one of the greatest movies of all time, attracting some scathing reviews at the time, it quickly became a cult classic.

If you love the movie, then you will feel right at home. For a video slot that could easily have been a lazily developed game with the Highlander brand slapped on it, Microgaming has put a surprising amount of effort into the development, much like in their Halloween movie game.

It is tough to describe, but the slot oozes 80s nostalgia. Think bright neon colours, and your typical 80s movie poster and you have the art style of this game.

The theme is probably not enough to keep you hooked

If you love Highlander, then you will feel nostalgic for about twenty minutes. Then you will wonder why you are playing the slot in the first place. It does not bring anything unique to the table.

The features that you find here are features that you will find in any old slot machine.

Our biggest concern with Highlander is that despite the limited feature set, the game is just too volatile. Sure, it is a medium volatility slot, but you feel like you will be going for an age without seeing a single win.

It certainly does not help that the minimum bet is 0.40, which is fairly high for many casual gamblers, and only 30 maximum bet which is low for high limit gamblers.

It needs that extra oomph to get players in, something which this Highlander online slot struggles with.

The Highlander slot base game can be fun

The base game does have a touch of excitement in it. The wilds pop up a lot, but they rarely seem to be part of a winning combination.

If you score yourself two scatters, then you will not only get a cash prize, but they turn wild too. This helps to form some wins. Never a lot of cash, but when you are lumping down 0.40 per spin on this slot, every little bit is going to help.

Get a lightning of wilds in the free spins

At any time during this feature, lightning can hit the reels and add random wilds. Each time the lightning hits, you get more wilds than the last time the lightning hit.

However, for a feature that only appears during the free spins, it does not seem to hit that often. In most cases, you will cap out at about four wilds.

We do wish there was a multiplier in place though as this would easily have pushed this game to a four-star game, just to add a touch more excitement.

However, when you play this, you are just going through the motions. It is not engaging in the slightest.
